The Real Secrets behind the Happily Ever After – The Shrek Series

Do I write this because I m doing it right with my happily ever after. Definitely Not,I m guilty as charged on many of these points and a work in progress :).Being Mom comes instantaneously. But being a great wife, I m always left feeling short on the measuring stick. As we watched the Shrek series this week,I gleaned many life truths.

To me the Shrek series is a hidden jewel with some profound unbeatable truths. The Story of Shrek and Fiona is not your regular fairy tale of a handsome prince and a beautiful princess trotting into the beautiful sunset towards a glamorous castle.

To me this is a comfort story, something you can relate to,something that doesn’t get lost with time.

Its about two beautiful souls with great attitude and most importantly contentment. The series always keeps underlying the strong theme of relationships.True Love and true friendship.

Today however I will focus more on the marriage aspect of this series:

1.Beautiful Fiona born human married and fell in love with an ogre.
Love is blind and the beauty of being blind to physical appearance or even shortcomings, to me, makes Fiona one of a kind.

Within reason, inside a marriage being blind to the faults of our spouses does help a lot.

2.Beautiful Fiona having a great attitude to getting to know Shrek as a person, seeing beyond his appearance.

Attitude changes perspective and perspective the way we react or treat our spouses.

3.Beautiful Fiona willing to let go of her beauty to understand it is true love which is more precious than beauty.

Accepting your happily after even though it doesn’t like look like how you dreamed it would be.We all have had expectations,so what happens when they aren’t met.Finding joy in the present helps the darkness of disappointment fade away.

4.Fiona a princess who had lived in a castle now lives with contentment in a swamp in a small hut with Shrek.

“Princess Fiona: I want what any princess wants – to live happily ever after… with the *ogre* I married. “

But it’s the *old* one I fell in love with, Dad – I’d give anything to have him back…

“Content makes poor men rich;Discontent makes rich men poor” – Benjamin Franklin

5.Fiona who was not power/money hungry and nagged Shrek to become King!Always Putting his needs first.

Guilty as charged.Nagging, something so inbuilt within us(women),with a power to break down houses faster than any demolisher.

Proverbs 21:19(NIV)
19 Better to live in a desert
than with a quarrelsome and nagging wife.

6.And the most important thing of all, knowing what is the most important thing.Relationships – ‘Spouse, children,Friends’

“You have three beautiful children,” Fiona tells Shrek, “a wife who loves you, and friends who adore you. You have everything. Why is it that the only person who can’t see that is you?”

A wise man/woman is one who realises the worth of things money can’t buy.
Sometimes when we see the world we forget to see the beautiful things we have.We tend to think the grass is greener on the other side.
A person who is grateful for the things he/she has is a content and full person.

7.Fiona always works as team with Shrek.

Princess Fiona: I’ve made changes for you, Shrek. Think about that.

Team work in a marriage brings equality and above all, one picking up where the other slacks.

I Pet 4:8 (NKJV)
8 And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”

Shrek to me is also no less.

1.Always ready to indulge his wife, wanting her happiness

That he was willing to turn human for her.

2.Even though his ungratefulness would have cost him his happily ever after.Self realization helps us to put things back into perspective

Shrek: I didn’t know what I had until I lost it.

3.Our Spouses offset us.Its just not us who are behind their success ,but them behind ours as well. They rescue us from ourselves, from our shortcomings.
Shrek: You know, I always thought I’d rescued you from the Dragon’s Keep.
Princess Fiona: You did.
Shrek: No. It was you who rescued me.

4.My most romantic line ever –

Shrek: Do you know what the best part of today was? I got the chance to fall in love with you all over again.

Don’t you think its a blessing,to have another day to make it right ?Another Chance to make it better?

I love this line. Forgetting the hurts, forgiving the mistakes, looking over faults and living in contentment makes one very happily ever after. What say you moms/wives/sisters?

Blessings!
