The novel is set in the fictional industrial town of Milton in the north of England.Margaret Hale leaves her rural setting and moves to settles with her parents in Milton.She has a rocky start with John Thornton a mill owner and begins a friendship with the poor mill workers in her community.The tenacity and the courage of the workers makes her sympathetic towards them.She also tries to understand the concerns of owners with respect to labor relations and strikes.She tries to bridge the gap between the two,how she goes about it, is the crux of the story.
