Commandments interpreted for the 21st century – Part 1

The 10 commandments is truly a beautiful moral code.Moral codes like guidelines and safety nets keep us from harms way.

1.Thou shalt not have any other gods.

Ex 20 :2,3
2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.

We are day to day surrounded by Gods that try to enslave us, they come in form of – Gods of money,gods of power,gods of godless philosophies,Gods of pleasure,Gods of Food.
Anything that takes the place of god,which becomes something we can’t live without becomes our god
and enslaves us to it.
We all have different gods that take control over us from time to time.What is your god,Have you identified it?

Mom Commandment: Mom may we love the lord our god with all our heart.Let us realize freedom and satisfaction comes from him and him alone.

2.No Idols:
Ex 20 :4

4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above,or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing mercy to thousands,to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Mom Commandment: Mom may we Love the lord our god with all our heart .Let not the gods of money,fame,power,materialism sit on the throne of our heart which rightfully belongs to the lord our god.

3.Thou Shalt not take the lords name in vain.
Ex 20 :7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

Many a times we interpret this command as wrongfully using the name of the lord.
But have we considered it in regard, when we interpret the bible wrongly or try to justify our deeds with light to bible verses?

Mom Commandment: Mom May we be careful as we teach or interpret the Word of God,the Bible, whether it is for our family or our neighbors.May we do it in the fear of the lord.

4.Keep the Sabbath Holy
Ex 20 :8,9,10

8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son,nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle,nor your stranger who is within your gates.11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea,and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

Am I busy busy on the sabbath,plans plans,tasks tasks to be completed.

The sabbath was made so we could connect to the lord and grow in him,but most days it gets spent with plans and a large amount of time spent in front of the tv.I fall prey to this often than not.

Mom Commandment: Mom,may we set apart the sabbath for the lord,may we rest from the busyness of life.

5.Honor thy Father and Mother
Ex 20 :12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

The only commandment with a promise.The bible doesn’t ask us honor a good father or mother.

Mom Commandment: Mom may we honor our parents ,which is definitely something we as a parent expect out of our own children.
